My Journey at the Arc of Attrition 2025: A Tale of Grit and Determination by an ultra coach

The Arc of Attrition 100-mile ultra marathon is known for its brutal terrain, unpredictable weather, and relentless demand on both body and mind. As an experienced ultra running coach, I approached the 2025 edition with a solid training plan, a strong mindset, and a deep respect for the challenge ahead.

But ultra running has a way of humbling even the most prepared athletes.

🌪️ Storms, Mud, and a Gritty Start

Just days before the race, a fierce storm battered the Cornish coast, leaving the trails waterlogged and treacherous. I started in Wave 2, surrounded by a determined field of runners. Despite the conditions, I felt strong early on — my coaching background and structured training helped me find rhythm and confidence in the opening miles.

🦵 A Painful Setback at Mile 30

At around mile 30, a slip on a slick section of trail led to a painful knee injury. I pushed through for another 30 miles, but by mile 62, I knew continuing would risk long-term damage. Making the decision to withdraw was tough — but it was the right call.

As an ultra coach, I often remind my athletes that knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing how to push. This race was a personal reminder of that principle.

🏅 Celebrating Others: Sarah Page’s Incredible Finish

While my race ended early, the Arc still delivered moments of inspiration. Sarah Page, a fellow runner, secured an outstanding 2nd place in the female category — a testament to the resilience and strength that define ultra running.

🧠 Coaching Takeaways from the Arc

Every race is a learning opportunity, and the Arc of Attrition 2025 reinforced several key coaching principles:

  • Adaptability is essential — conditions change, and so must your strategy.

  • Mental resilience matters — especially when the body starts to falter.

  • Recovery decisions are part of performance — knowing when to stop is a strength, not a weakness.
